Who Is Persephone?
Have you ever heard of Persephone? She has some famous parents - Zeus, the king of the gods, and Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility.
But more importantly, the story of the goddess of vegetation and queen of the underworld represents our own lives and the seasons and cycles we go through.
Persephone may have been born a goddess, but she had one heck of a life! She was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, who wanted to marry her and just took her. (I guess he couldn't be bothered to ask first.)
Her mother, Demeter, was so filled with grief at the loss of her daughter, she neglected the earth. No plants or food was growing anywhere in the world. There was nothing to harvest. Humanity suffered greatly.
Her father, Zeus, knew he had to get into action. He negotiated with Hades for Persephone's return. But it was too late. Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds in the underworld—a symbol of marriage in ancient times—so she was required to spend part of the year (usually a third or half) with Hades.
Now the Ancient Greeks used this story of Persephone living part of her life in shadow (the underworld) and part on the earth in Light to explain the changing seasons. Her time in the underworld was autumn and winter. Her return to the earth in spring symbolized rebirth and renewal.
Because of this, Persephone is often associated with themes of rebirth and the duality of life and death.
